Investigational drugs chosen for major Alzheimer’s prevention trial

Leading scientists have selected the first drugs to be evaluated in a worldwide clinical trial to determine whether they can prevent Alzheimer’s disease. The pioneering trial initially will test three promising drugs, each designed to target Alzheimer’s in different ways. The trial will be conducted by the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer’s Network Trials Unit at the School of Medicine.

Novelist to discuss craft of fiction, read from work

Over the course of 10 novels, Richard Powers has emerged as one of today’s most challenging and philosophically minded authors. Next week, Powers, the Visiting Hurst Professor of Creative Writing, will present a pair of events — a talk on the craft of fiction and a reading of his work —  for The Writing Program’s fall series.

Nominations are due Oct. 19 for the fifth annual James M. Holobaugh Honors. The honors recognize individuals who: live and lead with integrity; engage diverse communities on issues relevant to LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) equality; perform direct advocacy and service to the St. Louis metro community; and incorporate education and dialogue as part of their practice.

Swimming and diving teams post strong performances

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams posted six top-10 finishes as the WUSTL women tied for fifth and the men finished sixth in the team standings last Friday night at the Show-Me Showdown.
