$12 million gift from alumnus and trustee to transform Athletic Complex?

Alumnus and trustee Gary Sumers and his wife, Rachel, have committed $12 million to help expand and modernize the Athletic Complex and create the Gary and Rachel Sumers Recreation Center. The gift was announced at the celebration of the launch of Leading Together: The Campaign for Washington University. Construction of the new addition and renovations are expected to be completed in 2015.?

Powderly to lead global health initiatives ?

William G. Powderly, MD, will lead global health initiatives as a newly appointed deputy director of WUSTL’s Institute of Public Health. He also will serve as co-director of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine. ?

Students pack DUC for first presidential debate?

About 500 students attended the first 2012 presidential debate viewing party Oct. 3 in Tisch Commons, Danforth University Center. The event featured free food, games and prizes. Parties also are planned for the remaining debates at 8 p.m. Oct. 11, 16 and 22.??

“Who is this Mr. Head and where can I find more of his beautiful music?” As host of From the Top, NPR’s classical showcase, Christopher O’Riley could not resist a subversive impulse. Amidst the Bach and Brahms, the virtuoso pianist inserted his own Radiohead transcriptions. On Friday, Oct. 12, O’Riley and fellow classical pioneer Matt Haimovitz will present Shuffle.Play.Listen., their latest genre-busting collaboration.?

Law school hosts Court of Appeals special session

The School of Law is hosting a Special Session of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom, Anheuser-Busch Hall. Attorneys for three cases will have 15 minutes each to argue their sides. Q&A sessions will follow.

Men’s soccer tops Emory for first UAA win

A goal in the 88th minute by junior Jeremy Kirkwood lifted the men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Emory University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action last Sunday afternoon. With the win, WUSTL moved into a tie for fourth with Emory in the UAA standings, just one-half game behind No. 9 Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University and No. 6 New York University.
