$20 million gift establishes Taylor Family Institute for Innovative Psychiatric Research

Andrew and Barbara Taylor and the Crawford Taylor Foundation, the charity of the entire Jack C. Taylor family, have committed $20 million to the Department of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine to advance the science underlying the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illnesses. The gift creates the Taylor Family Institute for Innovative Psychiatric Research.

Astronaut awards scholarship, gives talk tomorrow

Apollo astronaut Rusty Schweickart will present Lindsey Steinberg, a senior majoring in chemistry in Arts & Sciences, with a $10,000 scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation during a public ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in Brookings Hall, Room 300. Schweickart also will share his experience as lunar module pilot of Apollo 9.

MBA student finishes record-setting hike

Olin Business School MBA student Michael McLaughlin made a triumphant return to campus Oct. 2 after hiking the Appalachian and Ozark trails back to back — a journey of more than 2,500 miles.

Mid-autumn show celebrates unity

The first Mid-Autumn Celebration Show, sponsored by the Chinese Students & Scholars Association and the Taiwanese Graduate Students Association, was held Sept. 30 in Graham Chapel. “Mid-Autumn Day,” a festival akin to American Thanksgiving, is widely celebrated by people across the Taiwan Strait.

The 2012 participants of the Global Diversity Overseas Seminar Program will share their experiences during two brown-bag lunch presentations this week. The winning staff members traveled to WUSTL study abroad locations in Paris, France, and Shanghai, China, this summer. The presentations will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 11.

Volleyball improves to 21-1 with five wins

The No. 1 volleyball team improved its record to 21-1 with five wins last week. The Bears earned a three-set win at Webster University last Wednesday before sweeping Knox College, Central College, Monmouth College and Westminster College last Friday and Saturday at the Bears Classic.
