Innovative cancer research gets boost from Siteman fund

A newly established fund to support innovative cancer research at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center has awarded its first two grants to high-tech efforts to undermine cancer cells’ ability to resist treatment. The awards will help scientists use genetic data to find new ways to attack treatment-resistant breast cancer and  target treatments based on cells’ responses to radiation therapy.

Obituary: Joseph R. Passonneau, 90

Joseph R. Passonneau, who served as dean of the School of Architecture from 1956-67, died in his sleep Monday, Aug. 22, at his home in Washington, D.C., following an extended illness. He was 90.

Public affairs vice chancellor search committee named

A search committee to identify candidates for the position of vice chancellor for public affairs has been appointed by Provost Edward S. Macias, PhD, executive vice chancellor, and Henry S. Webber, executive vice chancellor for administration. M. Fredric Volkmann, the current vice chancellor for public affairs, will retire Sept. 30.

Sam Fox School launches Public Lecture Series

Richard Meyer, author of Outlaw Represent-
ation: Censorship and Homosexuality in Twentieth-Century American Art
, will launch the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ fall Public Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7. The series continues through Nov. 9.

Picture this: First barbecue, then business school

Mahendra Gupta, PhD, dean and the Geraldine J. and Robert L. Virgil Professor of Accounting and Management, serves up a hamburger during the Olin Business School’s annual back to school cookout in the Simon Hall courtyard Aug. 30. The barbecue, held the first day of classes, welcomed business students to the new academic year and featured food and live music.
