Preston M. Green Hall dedicated Sept. 23

New engineering building Preston M. Green Hall, on the northeast corner of the Danforth Campus, was dedicated Sept. 23. Nancy Green (right, with Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton), widow of Preston M. Green, spoke at the dedication along with keynote speaker Charles M. Vest, PhD, president of the National Academy of Engineering.

Fat, sugar prove to be toxic to body cells

Excess nutrients, such as fat and sugar, don’t just pack on the pounds but can push cells in the body over the brink. Unable to tolerate this “toxic” environment, these cells commit suicide. Institute for School Partnership launches to improve teaching, learning in K-12

More than 20 years ago, Sarah C.R. Elgin, PhD, the Viktor Hamburger Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences, founded Washington University’s Science Outreach. Elgin’s success with Science Outreach is being recognized as WUSTL launches the interdisciplinary Institute for School Partnership to strategically improve teaching and learning within the K-12 education community.

Structure and Sadness opens Ovations series

Compression. Suspension. Torsion. Failure. The language of dance finds surprising echoes in the language of engineering. This weekend, Lucy Guerin Inc., one of Australia’s premier young dance companies, will launch this year’s Edison Ovations Series with Structure and Sadness, a work inspired by the 1970 collapse of Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge.

Men’s soccer suffers its first loss

The No. 4 men’s soccer team saw its seven-game, season-opening win streak come to an end with a 3-1 loss at No. 15 Dominican University Sept. 25 in River Forest, Ill. Senior Cody Costakis scored his third goal of the year in the first half.
