Campus Card program becomes ‘Bear Bucks’

The Campus Card program has been expanded and renamed “Bear Bucks.” Bear Bucks can be used at dining locations on four WUSTL campuses, the Campus Store, campus laundry and vending machines, off-campus eateries Bobo Noodle House and Kayak’s Coffee, and more.

Picture this: A WUSTL welcome

Another academic year has begun, but freshmen and new students have been going nonstop since arriving on campus Aug. 25. From the moment cars pulled up to the curb in the South 40, a WUSTL welcome was extended and it hasn’t let up. Also included: A slideshow of the some of the opening moments from Move In and Orientation.

LGBT-friendly campus: WUSTL earns five stars

For the second year in a row, Washington University has received a top rating in the LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index, published annually by Campus Pride. WUSTL was one of 33 schools, out of about 300 participants, to receive the five-star rating.

New master’s aims to change health behaviors

Poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking are often cited as causes of preventable illness and death in the United States. A new master’s program in Applied Health Behavior Research launching this fall is designed to address the science of health behavior, says Mario Schootman, PhD, the program’s director.

Adolescents with autism get key services from school programs

Nearly half of adolescents with an autism spectrum disorder used a mental health service in the past year to address issues such as behavioral problems, anxiety and depression. A new study from the Brown School reinforces how important school-based services are for this group. The study found 49 percent received the service at schools, and that African-American adolescents and youths from lower-income families were more likely to receive school-based services.

Lifelong Learning Institute hosts open house Sept. 8

The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) will host an open house titled “Show Me LLI” for prospective members at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the West Campus. The event, which will feature an overall orientation followed by several sample classes, is free and open to senior adults ages 55 and older. Refreshments will be served.

Football season begins Saturday at Knox College 

The football team opens its 2011 season Saturday, Sept. 3, at Knox College. Head coach Larry Kindbom returns 16 starters and 76 letterwinners from last year’s squad, which finished the season with a 7-3 record and a 2-1 mark in conference play. The home opener is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, against Rhodes College.
