Bear Beginnings: A Danforth Campus welcome

Members of the Class of 2015, new transfer and exchange students, and their parents and family members are arriving on campus this week. They will be welcomed with a variety of activities during Bear Beginnings: New Student Orientation, which begins after Move-In Thursday, Aug. 25, and continues through Monday, Aug. 29.

Device doesn’t eliminate risk of awareness
during surgery

Anesthesiology researchers at the School of Medicine have shown that a device to reduce the risk that patients will recall their surgery does not lower the risk of intraoperative awareness any more than a less expensive method. Unintended intraoperative awareness occurs when a patient becomes aware during surgery and later remembers the operation.

Disabled veterans’ lives improved through civic service program, study finds

Post-9/11 disabled veterans furthered their education, improved employment prospects and continued to serve their community through participating in The Mission Continues’ Fellowship Program, finds a new study by the Center for Social Development at the Brown School.

Valko named director of sustainability

Phil Valko, a WUSTL alumnus, has been named director of sustainability, announced Steven P. Hoffner, associate vice chancellor for operations. The director of sustainability is responsible for providing leadership, vision and strategy to advance WUSTL’s sustainability efforts.

Back-to-School Bash at Campus Store Monday

Renovations at the Campus Store are complete. To celebrate and welcome the campus community to explore the updated facility, the Campus Store is hosting a Back-to-School Bash from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29. Festivities include a DJ, carnival games, snow cones and pizza (served at noon). Prizes ranging from a digital camera, bike, and gift cards will be awarded throughout the day.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 29, the Record will shift into its academic year schedule. Look for emails Monday through Friday throughout the academic year when classes are in session. The Record website, record.wustl.edu, also will be updated daily.

Men’s soccer ranked No. 19 nationally

The men’s soccer team is ranked No. 19 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of American Continental Tire Division III preseason top 25 poll. WUSTL returns six starters and 28 letter winners from last year’s squad, including its top six scorers from 2010. Senior Patrick McLean led the Bears with six goals and 15 points last season.
