A rare 1950s comic book, titled Negro Romance, that Gerald Early, PhD, bought on eBay is the focus of a mystery in an upcoming episode of PBS’ History Detectives. The episode airs locally at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, on Nine PBS. It will be repeated at 1 a.m. Thursday, July 14, and 4 p.m. Sunday, July 17.

Doctors at the School of Medicine are performing a new procedure to treat atrial fibrillation, a common irregular heartbeat. Available at only a handful of U.S. medical centers, this “hybrid” procedure combines minimally invasive surgical techniques with the latest advances in catheter ablation.

Reporters filmed people across the United States reading the Bill of Rights. The students were filmed at the Old Courthouse, site of the Dred Scott case.

Kevin Moeller, PhD, professor of chemistry in Arts & Sciences, is working to find ways to use clean energy in clean chemistry. “We can make the oxidation reactions used in the synthesis of organic molecules cleaner by hitching photovoltaics to electrochemistry,” he says.

Jennifer Wray Cole, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology, died Saturday, July 2, from injuries sustained in a bicycling accident. She was 52. Cole had been a pediatric anesthesiologist at WUSTL and St. Louis Children’s Hospital since 1991.

The Gateway Festival Orchestra will launch its 48th season of free Sunday evening concerts in the Brookings Quadrangle at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 10, with “Various Variations,” a program exploring the use of variations by a handful of composers from the baroque period through the 20th century.

Rising senior Liz Phillips of the women’s track & field team was named a Capital One First-Team Academic All-American June 23. Phillips, a biomedical engineering major with a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average, is the fifth female in program history to receive first-team Academic All-America honors.
