Visionary leader Robert S. Brookings remembered

Civic leader, educational pioneer and philanthropist Robert S. Brookings played a pivotal role in the development of the St. Louis region, including creating what now is WUSTL’s Danforth Campus. He will be honored Wednesday and Thursday, June 22 and 23, with a lecture and a star on St. Louis’ Walk of Fame.

Gene vital to nerve cell development identified

The body’s ability to perform simple tasks like flexing muscles or feeling pain depends, in large part, on myelin, an insulating layer of fats and proteins that speeds the propagation of nerve cell signals. Scientists have identified a gene in mice that controls whether certain cells in the peripheral nervous system can make myelin.

Ozioma (localhealthdata.org) is a new tool from WUSTL’s Health Communication Research Laboratory designed to increase the amount of locally relevant health information in communities through media. Ozioma allows users to search for health data from more than 60 reliable sources — all in one place.

General to share leadership insights June 21

Lt. Gen. George J. Flynn, deputy commandant for combat development and integration for the U.S. Marine Corps, will share experiences from his 30-year military career at a Leadership Symposium Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, at Olin Business School. The event, part of Marine Week festivities taking place in St. Louis June 20-26, is free and open to the public.
