Genetic link to depression found

Researchers at the School of Medicine, led by Michele L. Pergadia, PhD, and King’s College London have independently identified DNA on chromosome 3 that appears to be related to depression. The new studies identify a DNA region containing up to 90 genes. Both are published May 16 in the American Journal of Psychiatry. FULL STORY

Outstanding Graduate Natalie Sklobovskaya: Sam Fox School-Art

Natalie Sklobovskaya, who will graduate Friday, May 20, with a double major in communication design and computer science, is not only a driven illustrator, but she also enjoys computer programing, writing and playing music, and creating websites. Federal regulatory spending continues to increase, new study says

Despite efforts to freeze non-security discretionary spending, the budgets of federal regulatory agencies are increasing in both 2011 and 2012. The estimated cost of running regulatory agencies in fiscal year 2011 is $54.9 billion, a 5.7 percent increase over 2010, according to a new study from the Weidenbaum Center. FULL STORY

Picture this: ‘You are our future’

Under Secretary of the Army Joseph W. Westphal, PhD, was on hand as 17 members of the Gateway Battalion, St. Louis’ Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) based at Washington University, were commissioned as new Army officers. The class of 17 cadets from area universities, including seven from WUSTL, took an oath of office during the 93rd annual Gateway Battalion Army ROTC Commissioning Ceremony, held May 13 in the Danforth University Center. London School of Economics awards Croslin

Chike Croslin has received the Alumni and Friends of the London School of Economics Scholarship for 2011-12. The academic merit scholarship, given annually to an American citizen or permanent resident of the United States, covers full  tuition and fees for one year of graduate study. He is a political science major with a minor in institutional social analysis, both in Arts & Sciences. FULL STORY

  • Women’s golf finishes eighth in shortened NCAA championship. The final round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship was canceled May 13 due to a massive band of lightning storms at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. WUSTL finished the three-day event with a score of 1,014, tying with Williams College for eighth place.
