Jill D. Friedman has been named vice chancellor for public affairs, effective Jan. 1, announced Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. Friedman, a Washington University alumna, is a senior vice president and partner in Fleishman-Hillard’s public affairs practice at the firm’s world headquarters in St. Louis.

New research by Richard Grucza, PhD, at the School of Medicine shows that a legal drinking age of less than 21 is linked to a higher risk of homicides and suicides among adult women. Grucza says the study’s results help to solidify the case for drinking-age laws.

Peter Wyse Jackson, PhD, was installed as the George Engelmann Professor of Botany in Arts & Sciences in a Nov. 21 ceremony. Wyse Jackson became president of the Missouri Botanical Garden in September 2010 and, by tradition, the president of the garden is also awarded the professorship at WUSTL.

Graduate and professional students within the McDonnell International Scholars Academy shared their cultures Nov. 19 in an interactive fair at the Saint Louis Science Center. During “Planet Passport: Your Journey to Our Multicultural World,” scholars showcased the language, dress, history, government, educational systems and technological innovations of more than 15 cultures.

Throughout the 20th century, filmmakers have explored the ever-quickening pace of technological development through visionary images of both social and architectural space. In December, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will screen three such films as part of its Cities of the Future Film Series.

Twenty football players were named to the 2011 all-University Athletic Association (UAA) teams — including eight on the first team. Senior wide receiver Easton Knott earned UAA co-offensive player of the year accolades, becoming the fourth player in school history to earn the honor.
