New evidence for earliest modern humans in Europe

The timing, process and archaeology of the peopling of Europe by early modern humans have been actively debated for more than a century. Reassessment of the anatomy and dating of a fragmentary upper jaw with three teeth from Kent’s Cavern in southern England has shed new light on these issues.

Holocaust lecture features Rosen on problem of child soldiers

David Rosen, JD, PhD, professor of anthropology and of law at Fairleigh Dickinson University and author of Armies of the Young: Child Soldiers in War and Terrorism, will present “The Moral Complexity of the Child Soldier ‘Problem’ ” for the Assembly Series Holocaust Memorial Lecture at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, in Graham Chapel.

Picture this: Proton beam accelerator installation

Workers unwrap the world’s first superconducting syncronocyclotron proton accelerator at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the School of Medicine. The device is part of a proton therapy system being installed at the medical center’s Kling Center for Proton Therapy.

Multi-sector panel focuses on immigration policy

A Tuesday, Nov. 8, panel discussion will focus on immigration challenges and potential solutions. Congressman Wm. Lacy Clay, D-Mo., will serve as keynote speaker during the forum. To foster dialogue, representatives of both political parties — and those who advocate for immigrants’ rights and those with experience in enforcement agencies — will participate.

WUSTL Police help ‘warm up’ St. Louis

The WUSTL Police Department is teaming up with the Kurt Warner First Things First Foundation and Operation Food Search for the 11th annual Warners’ Warm-up winter-coat drive. Through Monday, Nov. 14, the WUSTL police station will serve as a drop-off location for new or gently used winter coats.

Farmers market moves indoors for winter

The farmers market at the medical center has moved indoors for the winter season. The market is open Thursdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the McDonnell Pediatric Research Building atrium. Some vendors may stay later than 2 p.m., and others may leave early if they sell out.

Women’s soccer wins two at home

The No. 17 women’s soccer team moved into a second-place tie in the UAA standings with a pair of home victories last weekend. Freshman Lillie Toaspern recorded a hat trick in a 5-1 win against the University of Rochester and then scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win against No. 18 Case Western Reserve University. The Bears (14-4) play their final regular-season contest Saturday, Nov. 5, at the University of Chicago.
