PAD’s annual Dance Theatre this weekend

Kinetic Field Work, the 2011 Washington University Dance Theatre event, takes place this weekend, Dec. 2, 3 and 4, in Edison Theatre. The annual showcase this year features more than 50 student dancers, selected by audition, performing new and original works by seven faculty and guest choreographers.

Surprising pathway implicated in stuttering

Researchers at the School of Medicine, including Stuart A. Kornfeld, MD, have obtained new evidence — the first of its kind — that at least some persistent stuttering is caused by mutations in a gene governing not speech, but a metabolic pathway involved in recycling old cell parts.

Human, artificial intelligence join forces to pinpoint fossil locations

Traditionally, fossil-hunters often could only make educated guesses as to where fossils lie. But thanks to a software model used by WUSTL professor Glenn Conroy, PhD, and researchers at Western Michigan University, fossil-hunters’ reliance on luck when finding fossils may be diminishing. Using artificial neural networks, Conroy and colleagues developed a computer model that can pinpoint productive fossil sites.

Severe winter weather: Where to find information

Should weather conditions create hazardous travel conditions, the university will take into consideration the safety of the faculty, staff and students as well as the services that must be provided despite the severe weather. In the unlikely event that WUSTL alters the work and/or class schedule, an announcement will be posted on the main web page, wustl.edu, as well as aired by a number of local media outlets.

Fahey coaches 600th win

Coach Nancy Fahey became the fastest women’s basketball coach in NCAA history to reach 600 career wins with a 62-52 victory over Hendrix College Nov. 26 at the WU Field House. Fahey reached the 600-win milestone in just her 706th career game at WUSTL.
