Halfway through the 2011 United Way campaign, the university community has raised approximately $450,000 toward its goal of $650,000 to support more than 170 United Way of Greater St. Louis agencies. These agencies — which offer an array of services to the St. Louis community — serve a large, diverse population of more than 1 million people each year in 16 counties in Missouri and Illinois.

Researchers at the School of Medicine have restored normal blood sugar metabolism in diabetic mice using a compound the body makes naturally. The finding suggests that it may one day be possible for people to take the compound much like a daily vitamin as a way to treat or even prevent type 2 diabetes.

Sidney Outlaw (right), a rising young American baritone, will join pianist Carol Wong for an intimate Liederabend at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9. Literally translated as “evening of song,” Liederabend is a German term referring to a recital given by a singer and pianist, particularly of works by 19th-century Austrian or German composers.

Bank of America’s plan to begin charging customers $5 a month for using its debit card has been met with resistance from citizens and members of Congress alike. In fact, there is some reputational capital at risk as a result of this kind of charge, says banking expert and Olin Emeritus Professor Stuart I. Greenbaum.

A memorial service has been set for James E. McLeod, vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, who passed away Sept. 6. The women’s tennis team had three student athletes advance to the third round of the singles draw at the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Regionals Sept. 30-Oct. 2 in Kalamazoo, Mich. The regional wrapped up the fall tennis season. The women’s team resumes its schedule in March 2012.
