In 1937, Tennessee Williams took fourth in a playwriting competition here. So upset was the young writer that he left town and later, in The Glass Menagerie, exacted sly artistic revenge upon WUSTL. This weekend, Williams returns in the form of two one-man shows by veteran actor and playwright Jeremy Lawrence.

Tomás Saraceno, creator of visionary sculptural models inspired by clouds and other natural structures, will be on campus at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Steinberg Hall. Saraceno will discuss his work as part of the Sam Fox School’s fall Public Lecture Series. The talk is held in conjunction with the exhibition Tomás Saraceno: Cloud-Specific, on view through Jan. 9 at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum.

Washington University Libraries present a book talk by Michael Sherberg, PhD, associate professor of Italian in Arts & Sciences, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Olin Library, Ginkgo Reading Room, Level 1. Sherberg’s lecture will discuss three 16th-century translations of Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy, and what the translations tell scholars about the politics and poetics of translation in the Renaissance.

About 1,500 School of Medicine employees took a walk in Hudlin Park Sept. 28 to kick off Tread the Med, the school’s walking campaign. More than 120 teams and nearly 1,900 employees have registered for the program, which encourages walking 10,000 steps a day.

Faculty and administrators are invited to submit proposals for program initiatives that strengthen and promote diversity and inclusion at WUSTL. Projects aimed at improving the university environment for women and members of underrepresented minority groups can receive up to $30,000 through the Diversity and Inclusion Grant program. The deadline for submission of 2011-12 proposals is Nov. 5.

A memorial service has been set for James E. McLeod, vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, who passed away Sept. 6. He will be remembered by the university community at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Field House. The service will be streamed live via the Internet.
