Founders Day gala honors faculty, alumni Nov. 5

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin will give the keynote address at the annual Founders Day gala Saturday, Nov. 5. The event also honors faculty and alumni who have made significant contributions to WUSTL. Today, the Record highlights the four Distinguished Faculty Award recipients.

For Halloween, don’t get tricked into hurting your eyes with unsafe contact lenses

Wearing decorative contact lenses — also known as fashion, color, cosmetic or theatre contact lenses — on Halloween changes the look of the eyes, but be forewarned. If used incorrectly, they can impair vision and damage the eyes, says an optometrist at the School of Medicine.

Kemper Museum panel discussion to explore what art can learn from ecology

What can art learn from ecology? It’s a question posed by visionary artist Tomás Saraceno, whose plans for an airborne city render obsolete the very idea of “environmental footprint.” At 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, the Kemper Art Museum will present an interdisciplinary panel discussion held in conjunction with the exhibition Tomás Saraceno: Cloud Specific.

Legendary dancer Jock Soto on campus this week

In 24 years of a professional career, Jock Soto danced dozens of principal roles with the New York City Ballet. At 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, Soto, a visiting artist in the Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences, will introduce a public screening of Water Flowing Together, a documentary film about his remarkable life.

Picture this: Recognizing World Food Day

The Brown School’s Transdisciplinary Problem Solving course on global hunger and undernutrition hosted a Hunger Banquet Oct. 18 in Brown Hall Lounge to recognize World Food Day. As they entered the banquet, guests were given tickets representing food allowances from different income levels around the world. Story includes a video of the event.

Football wins again

Junior quarterback Dan Burkett threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score as the football team posted a 24-21 win at Oberlin College Oct. 22. WUSTL (4-3) opens University Athletic Association play this Saturday at Carnegie Mellon University.
