Danforth Dialogues set model for civil discourse

A new video series, called the Danforth Dialogues, demonstrates how persons with different views can engage each other forcefully and respectfully. Former Sen. John C. Danforth moderated the first discussion between Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., and Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind. The series is co-sponsored by the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics.

High-dose vitamin E increases prostate cancer risk

High-dose vitamin E supplements increase the risk of prostate cancer, results of a large clinical trial show. The study’s findings, published Oct. 12 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, are based on an updated review of data from the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial, for which WUSTL was a clinical site.

Coping with climate change topic of Walker lecture

Charles F. Kennel, PhD, chair of the National Academy of Sciences’ Space Studies Board, will deliver the fourth annual Robert M. Walker Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in Whitaker Hall, Room 100. Kennel will discuss “Managing Climate Risk: Precarious Decades Ahead.”

Danforth Campus celebrates Campus Sustainability Week

WUSTL will celebrate Campus Sustainability Week on the Danforth and Medical campuses next week. Danforth Campus activities include a workday at the Burning Kumquat garden, a ribbon-cutting for the bike path through campus, a local meal and more.

Interdisciplinary URSA grants awarded by research office

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research has announced the six winning teams of the 2011 University Research Strategic Alliance (URSA) grants. URSA grants offer a one-year, $25,000 award to full-time faculty members at WUSTL who begin a new collaboration with investigators from different disciplines. Researchers who receive the grant work together in a new area of research or plan to approach a problem in a different way.

The School of Medicine is launching a fellowship designed to give participants an inside look at the operation and governance of an academic medical center. The Executive Management Fellowship Program is a two-year program that will give fellows experience in human resources, finance, clinical department management, strategic planning, research administration, and other areas of operations at the School of Medicine.

Men’s soccer picks up OT win at Emory

The No. 9 men’s soccer team senior Kevin Privalle scored his first goal of the season during double overtime to lift WUSTL to a 2-1 victory at Emory University Oct. 9. The Bears continue a three-game UAA road trip tomorrow at defending UAA champion New York University.
