Sustainability Pledge debuts today

WUSTL students, faculty and staff can show their commitment to sustainability by taking the WUSTL Sustainability Pledge at SustainabilityPledge.wustl.edu. The pledge asks those who sign it to live more sustainably at their workplace, school and home by reducing personal energy consumption, producing less waste, conserving resources and recycling. Scientists probe the epigenome

A WUSTL team, led by Sarah C.R. Elgin, PhD, is participating in the modENCODE project, a massive effort to map all the elements in model organisms that affect whether genes are silenced or expressed. The work supports the more complex ENCODE project, which is mapping the same elements in the human genome. Together, the projects will “put flesh on the bones” of the Human Genome Project, Elgin says. FULL STORY

Washington People: Shanti A. Parikh

Growing up in Maryland, Shanti A. Parikh, PhD, knew early on she wanted to be an anthropologist. But at the encouragement of her mother, Parikh majored in finance at the University of Virginia. A stint in the Peace Corps following graduation returned Parikh to her original passion and to the area of study that would remain her lifetime focus. FULL STORY

WUSTL students are invited to build proposals for full-time summer work in the development and implementation of an innovative community project. The intent to apply deadline is today, Jan. 24, and proposals are due Friday, Feb. 11.
