New unit connects urban design, public health

John Hendrix, a professor and founding chair of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture program, was installed Jan. 26 as the Kenneth E. Hudson Professor of Art.

Marcus Foston, with colleagues at the McKelvey School of Engineering, won research support for two projects. With Fuzhong Zhang, he will continue efforts to design better underwater adhesives based on how mussel feet work. Separately, with Ulugbek Kamilov, he won a grant to study ways to “upcycle” plastic waste.

Rachel Penczykowski, an assistant professor of biology in Arts & Sciences, won a prestigious National Science Foundation grant for early-career faculty. The award will fund a project investigating infestations of a common plant pathogen in the St. Louis area.
