Diwali performance to celebrate South Asian dance and song

Presented by student group Ashoka, Washington University’s annual Diwali performance is a celebration of South Asian dance and song. It also serves as a showcase for the region’s colorful fashions. Diwali, known as the festival of lights, will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4 and 5, in Edison Theatre.

Nicholas C. Smith, a PhD candidate in sociology at Indiana University, will discuss his research in a talk titled “Sick by Structure: Residential Segregation, Social Networks, and Black-White Disparities in Health.” Seigle Hall, Room 210.

International Humanities Prize honoree Alison Bechdel speaks

4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9

Cartoonist Alison Bechdel, author of “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic” and other works that explore queer identity and family relationships, will deliver a lecture as she receives the Washington University International Humanities Prize, presented by the Center for the Humanities in Arts & Sciences. ‘Climate change and the arts’

6:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4

Composer Christopher Stark, associate professor of music in Arts & Sciences, will discuss his composition “Fire Ecologies,” an hourlong musical and video experience that explores American landscapes through the lens of climate change. Following the discussion, New York-based group Unheard-of Ensemble will perform the work. 560 Music Center.

The “Divided City” spotlight film lineup focuses on the racial divide in St. Louis and other U.S. cities and offers an international perspective by highlighting racial and ethnic divides in cities elsewhere. Screenings will take place Nov. 4-12.
