Who Knew WashU? Question: When the Modern Literature Collection was founded, James Merrill — author of the famous shape poem “Christmas Tree” — was among the first poets to be approached for manuscript materials. In what year was the collection founded?
Answer: B) 1964. Today, the James Merrill Papers housed at University Libraries comprise one of the most extensive literary archives held by any institution. An episode of “Poetry for All,” a podcast co-hosted by Abram Van Engen of Arts & Sciences, discusses that poem.
Congrats to this week’s winner, undergraduate student Jojo Silagi, who will receive an “I Knew WashU” luggage tag!
