Legendary author to give Assembly Series talk

Acclaimed author Joy Williams returns to the university at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, for a special Assembly Series reading in Graham Chapel from her new novel, “Harrow.” Afterward, her former student David Schuman, in Arts & Sciences, will interview Williams about her long career. The exhibition “Joy Williams: Honored Guest” is on display at Olin Library through January.

Food sovereignty in Native American communities

Devon Mihesuah, member of the Choctaw Nation and professor at the University of Kansas, and Elizabeth Hoover, professor at the University of California, Berkeley, will offer a virtual discussion of farming, gardening and food sovereignty in Native American communities as part of the Climate Change Speaker Series.

2–4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12

The Danforth Staff Council will present a virtual fall town hall. University leaders will share information, including a COVID-19 and campus health update, an HR update and a livestreamed interview with Shantay Bolton, executive vice chancellor for administration.

Child and adolescent mental health discussion

The International Center for Child Health and Development at the Brown School welcomes Leyla Ismayilova, of the University of Chicago, for a virtual lecture on strategies to help children and adolescents deal with trauma and to strengthen family support systems.

Garb Lecture Series on the power of education in prison

2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11

The Prison Education Project presents the inaugural Maggie Garb Lecture Series this month, beginning Monday, Oct. 11. The virtual series will feature scholars, practitioners, grassroots organizers and impacted students from across the country. The keynote speaker is Syrita Steib, who founded Operation Restoration after her release from prison, on Wednesday, Oct. 13.

Kemper virtual tour: ‘The Outwin’

The Kemper Art Museum presents an online tour featuring the finalists of the National Portrait Gallery’s fifth triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition with student educator Jay Buchanan. The virtual tour will explore selected portraits that offer perspectives on themes of sociopolitical relevance. The event will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9.
