Kemper Art Museum features ‘Autonomous Future’ exhibit

A van gleams darkly in the seedy neon of 1970s Times Square. Taxis queue for gas amidst a global oil crisis. In “The Autonomous Future of Mobility,” the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum explores how car culture shapes American cities, energy consumption and popular notions of freedom and independence. The virtual exhibition will remain on view through March 12.

State of the University address

2–4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16

Chancellor Andrew D. Martin will deliver his first annual State of the University address. The virtual event will be recorded for those who are unable to attend. Immediately following the address, students, faculty and staff are invited to join university leaders for breakout Q&A sessions.

‘The Weight of History’ lecture

6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16

The Sam Fox School welcomes artist Addoley Dzegede for an online lecture as part of the MFA Lecture Series. Dzegede earned a master’s in visual art from WashU. She is currently a fellow at the Tulsa Artist Fellowship.

‘A Killing Cure’ talk

7–8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17

The Department of Education in Arts & Sciences presents Noliwe Rooks, of Cornell University, for a talk on education, segregation and health as it relates to Black communities. After her talk, Rooks will join others in higher education for a conversation connecting themes from her work to the St. Louis region.

‘Monumental Anti-Racism’ lecture

11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13

University College’s 2021 MLA Lecture Series continues virtually with a lecture by Geoff Ward, professor of African and African American studies in Arts & Sciences. The theme of this year’s series is “unprecedented times,” reflective of the pandemic, political division and the Black Lives Matter movement. Save the date for the final lecture in the series, “Early Onset Depression: Causes, Consequences and Treatment,” on Feb. 20.

Exhibits and ongoing events

‘Screening Contagion’ film series

The university community is invited to view four pandemic films and attend a series of panel discussions. The first discussion is about the Hollywood blockbuster “Contagion,” at 4 p.m. today. Conversations with faculty in the humanities, arts and medicine will help attendees process the films and the current pandemic. Film discussions continue March 11, April 8 and April 29.
