A name change for Alumni and Development
Alumni & Development Programs at Washington University has changed its name to University Advancement to better reflect the department’s renewed purpose to advance the university’s mission.

Gene ID’d as target for dementia in Parkinson’s
School of Medicine researchers have found that a genetic variant linked to dementia triggers the spread of clumps of proteins through the brain. The findings suggest that therapies that target the gene might reduce the risk of dementia for people with Parkinson’s.

Obituaries
Alec Becker, a first-year student in Arts & Sciences, died by suicide Feb. 6 in his hometown of Dallas. He was 18. Becker only attended Washington University for the fall semester, but friends and faculty who had the opportunity to know Becker say he was thoughtful, warm and spirited.

Chancellor Andrew D. Martin shares a message with the university community about the impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak: “I urge each member of our community to see one another’s humanity and to extend compassion and empathy to those most impacted.”

The Mastercard Impact Fund recently awarded the university’s Social Policy Institute a three-year $1.5 million grant. Mastercard’s founding partnership of the SPI will further strengthen the institute’s ability to use research and data science to impact social policy and to promote inclusive growth in the St. Louis community and beyond.

A community development project led by Linda C. Samuels, at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, and Christopher Trumble, at the University of Arizona, has won a national Architectural Education Award for Collaborative Practice.

Question: The nation will celebrate the birthday of George Washington, the university’s namesake, on Monday, Feb. 17. But after whom was the university originally named?
Answer: B) William Greenleaf Eliot, the first chair of the Board of Trustees and the third chancellor.
