Day of Dialogue reaffirms diversity commitment

The university community will come together for the annual Day of Dialogue & Action Feb. 18-19. The conference includes two full days of talks, panel discussions and workshops, letting participants get involved in efforts to improve our culture and climate.

Noise-induced hearing loss blocked with drug compound

Loud noise can damage the inner ear and cause hearing loss. Studying mice, School of Medicine researchers have shown that a drug compound can block damage caused by loud noise, raising the possibility of medication to prevent such hearing loss.

Collaboration lets researchers ‘read’ proteins

A collaboration between the McKelvey School of Engineering and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital uncovers the underlying rules that, when broken, contribute to neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS.

Abu-Amer named J. Albert Key Professor

Yousef Abu-Amer, a leading expert in inflammatory joint disease and bone loss, has been named the inaugural Dr. J. Albert Key Professor at the School of Medicine. Key was a former head of orthopedic surgery.

In Ethiopia, girls often miss or drop out of school because of their periods. Freweini Mebrahtu designed a solution — and, with support from St. Louis-based charity Dignity Period, founded by WashU faculty member L. Lewis Wall, it has benefited nearly 800,000 girls and women. Mebrahtu recently was named CNN’s “Hero of the Year.”
