Big Bang to black holes talk preview

Nobel physicist Kip Thorne to speak on the ‘warped side’ of the universe

Nobel laureate Kip Thorne will visit the Danforth Campus to deliver the Robert M. Walker Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 7. Thorne’s work in theoretical physics examines gravitational waves, the Big Bang and what these phenomena tell us about the dynamics of the universe.

Informal Cities Workshop lecture

The annual Informal Cities Workshop provides students an intensive, hands-on opportunity to grapple with the frictions between the formal and informal aspects of a city. The 2019 workshop, “Collective Design in an Era of Climate Change,” is led by Geeta Mehta and Matthew Bernstine and focuses on a site in India. Steinberg Hall Auditorium.

‘The Color of Compromise’ book talk

Attend a public dialogue between author Jemar Tisby and WashU’s John Inazu on Tisby’s acclaimed book “The Color of Compromise: The Truth About the American Church’s Complicity in Racism,” which explores connections between the church and racism throughout American history. Wrighton Hall, Room 300.

‘Arts as Civic Engagement’ event

6–8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5

Join the Gephardt Institute as the 2019 Arts as Civic Engagement student residents and partner arts organizations illustrate their work through a creative presentation. The event includes a conversation with St. Louis-based artist and activist Damon Davis. Kemper Art Museum.

Colloquium celebrates Samuel Beckett’s legacy

Thursday, Nov. 7 – Friday, Nov. 8

Take part in a two-day colloquium at Olin Library devoted to the writings of Samuel Beckett, exploring the impact of his work in literature, theater and translation. University Libraries is home to a premier collection of Beckett materials. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his Nobel Prize in literature.
