Probiotics – living bacteria taken to promote digestive health – evolve once inside the body and have the potential to become less effective and sometimes even harmful, according to a new School of Medicine study.

Home-based tools limit maternal weight gain

A new study from the Brown School finds that providing a home-based lifestyle intervention minimizes excess weight gain during pregnancy and for the year after giving birth in underserved African-American women with obesity.

How electricity-eating microbes fix carbon dioxide

A research team led by Arpita Bose in Arts & Sciences showed how an electricity-eating microbe takes up electrons from conductive substances like metal oxides or rust to reduce carbon dioxide. The work is described in Nature Communications.

Sculptor and longtime faculty member Ronald Leax, the Halsey C. Ives Professor Emeritus of Art, will receive the Dean’s Medal for outstanding service April 4 as part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ annual Awards for Distinction dinner.

Developmental biologist Samantha Morris, at the School of Medicine, and her lab have developed a cellular tracking system. Watch this video to learn about the work, which is among the finalists in the STAT Madness competition. Vote online in the semifinal round through Tuesday.
