New genetic clues to early-onset form of dementia

An international team of researchers, led by the School of Medicine, has found that a lone mutation in a single gene that causes an inherited form of frontotemporal dementia makes it harder for neurons in the brain to communicate with one another, leading to neurodegeneration.

Brown School researcher to study mental health on global scale

Leopoldo J. Cabassa, associate professor at the Brown School, is part of a team that has received a five-year $2.9 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to study interventions for people suffering from mental health issues in Chile.

Kielt named vice chancellor for information technology

Chris Kielt will become vice chancellor and chief information officer at Washington University, announced Henry S. Webber, executive vice chancellor and chief administrative officer. Kielt has held a similar role at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Young, hip farmers: Coming to a city near you

A new breed of American farmers are being drawn to the field by factors such as higher education, personal politics, disenchantment with urban life and the search for an authentic rural identity, according to new research by anthropologists from Arts & Sciences.

J. Evan Sadler, director of hematology, 67

Evan Sadler photoPioneering hematologist J. Evan Sadler, MD, PhD, a world-renowned expert in the study and treatment of blood clotting disorders and director of the Division of Hematology at the School of Medicine, died Dec. 13 at his home in Clayton, Mo., following a brief illness. He was 67.
