Commencement: time to celebrate Class of 2018

As more than 3,100 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree candidates are ready to begin a new chapter, the university first will recognize their achievements during its 157th Commencement this morning in Brookings Quadrangle.

‘Unprecedented look’ into protein behind hypertension and more

The conditions of hypertension, epilepsy and overactive bladder may be linked by electrical activity in a protein long studied by biomedical engineer Jianmin Cui. His lab will collaborate with two others to take an unprecedented look into its molecular mechanisms.

Why chikungunya, other viruses target joints

School of Medicine researchers have identified the molecular handle that the chikungunya virus grabs to get inside cells. The findings could lead to ways to prevent or treat disease caused by chikungunya and related viruses.

Chief justice attends law awards event

John Roberts Jr., chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, attended the School of Law’s 2018 Distinguished Alumni Awards event. Kevin Lipson, a 1980 alum being honored, is a partner at Roberts’ former law firm. Read more about the honorees on the law site.

Blood type affects severity of diarrhea caused by E. coli

A new study shows that a kind of E. coli most associated with “travelers’ diarrhea” and children in underdeveloped areas causes more severe disease in people with blood type A. School of Medicine researchers led the study.

Take part in used shoe drive

Donate gently used shoes at collection spots on the Medical Campus by May 31. The Office of Sustainability and the School of Medicine Operations and Facilities Management Department is coordinating the effort with Shoeman Water Projects. The nonprofit helps raise funds to provide clean water in developing countries.

‘Despite call for big cuts, Trump’s budget maintains regulatory spending’

Melinda Warren, director of the Weidenbaum Center Forum, co-wrote a piece in The Hill analyzing President Donald Trump’s fiscal 2019 budget proposal, finding that spending on regulatory agencies remains about the same as in 2018.

Robert W. Gereau IV, the Dr. Seymour and Rose T. Brown Professor of Anesthesiology at the School of Medicine, is one of 12 pain experts selected for the 2018-19 Mayday Pain & Society Fellowship. He will attend a four-day workshop in June in Washington.

Answer: B) Farmer, a law student, earned his degree in 1889. He went on to be the first African-American lawyer to argue before the Missouri Supreme Court.
