University responds to proposed federal tax legislation

As the nation’s leaders debate the proposed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, universities across the country are responding to provisions that would affect institutions of higher education. Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton is among the leaders expressing concerns.

Bruchas named Mallinckrodt Professor of Anesthesiology

Neuroscientist Michael R. Bruchas has been installed as the Henry Elliot Mallinckrodt Professor of Anesthesiology at the School of Medicine. His research is helping clarify the neural foundation of behaviors such as anxiety and depression.

New orthopedic clinic opens

Washington University Orthopedics has opened a new clinic at Progress West Hospital in O’Fallon, Mo. Physicians at the new location will offer diagnosis and treatment for general orthopedics, with a focus on pediatric patients.

‘Idea of 100 percent renewable energy isn’t feasible’

Engineer Richard Axelbaum writes a column in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch arguing that the St. Louis Board of Aldermen’s resolution calling for the city to use only renewable energy by 2035 won’t work because wind and solar power are unreliable.

Six Washington University faculty members have been honored with 2017 Emerson Electric Co. “Excellence in Teaching” awards. Each year, honorees are chosen by their schools and by the university’s Teaching Center for their innovation and leadership in teaching.

woman jumping rope Question: In 2013, WashU student (now engineering graduate) Molly Harrison performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. Which activity did she showcase during the parade?
Answer: D) Harrison got interested in competitive rope skipping in the fourth grade and joined a team. In 2013, she was invited, for the second time, to perform a routine in the parade along with dozens of other jumpers from around the country.
