Who Knew WashU?

Battling Bear logoQuestion: What was the first nickname for Washington University athletic teams before students voted to change it to the Bears?
Answer: B) Pikers. In December 1925, the student body voted to make the university’s athletic teams the Bears. (This Battling Bear logo is from decades ago.) The previous nickname was a reference to the Pike that ran along Lindell Boulevard and served as the amusement section of the 1904 World’s Fair.
Congrats to this week’s winner, Jim Burmeister, longtime director of Commencement before retiring in 2013. He will receive an “I Knew WashU” luggage tag!
