Academy of Science-St. Louis honors researchers
Five university researchers are being honored as outstanding scientists by the Academy of Science-St. Louis. They are: Stephen Beverley, Liviu Mirica, Kater Murch, Edward Spitznagel and Peter Wyse Jackson.

Jeffrey McCune, of Arts & Sciences, discusses in this video his course on Kanye West, the importance of hip-hop culture and the ways West’s work helps us examine today’s pressing issues. McCune will give an Assembly Series lecture at 6 p.m. tomorrow, March 8.

Symposium explores the rise of Donald Trump
“American Democracy and the Rise of Donald Trump” will be the focus as faculty experts in economics, history, law, political science, psychology and sociology gather for a public symposium from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, March 9, in Brown Hall, Room 100.

Artists Williams, Hernandez to discuss PXSTL tomorrow
Chicago-based artists Amanda Williams and Andres L. Hernandez, winners of the PXSTL competition, will discuss the project in a public lecture Wednesday, March 8. The free talk will launch the Sam Fox School’s spring Public Lecture Series.

Reminder: The university will test its emergency communication system, WashUAlerts, at 10 a.m. today. The test will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather or an emergency is occurring at that time.
The School of Medicine’s innovative program to introduce lay people to the world of medicine will get underway again later this month. Register now to take part in Mini-Medical School, a series of lectures and hands-on labs on everything from surgery to back pain to Alzheimer’s disease.

Obituaries
Pat Schoen, a 1951 alumna and former instructor in Olin Business School, died Feb. 26. She was 89. Schoen was a strong supporter of the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, founded by her husband, Sterling Schoen. Visitation will be Thursday, March 9, with funeral services the following morning.

ShiNung Ching, of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, will examine cognitive functions of the brain with a five-year, $500,000 CAREER award from the National Science Foundation.
