Scientists link single gene to some cases of autism spectrum disorder

Scientists have linked mutations in a single gene to autism in people with a rare tumor syndrome typically diagnosed in childhood. The findings, in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), may lead to a better understanding of autism’s genetic roots.

The American Physical Society and the American Institute of Physics this month awarded the 2017 Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics to Carl M. Bender of Arts & Sciences.
