Barch, Ley, Boime to be honored

Deanna Barch, who researches cognition and emotion in illnesses such as schizophrenia, and Timothy Ley, MD, an expert in cancer genomics and leukemia, will receive the 2016 faculty achievement awards, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton announced. Irving Boime, a developmental biologist, also is being honored.

Research suggests new contributor to heart disease

New engineering research suggests elastic fibers in the arterial wall are the culprit in causing buildup of plaque in arteries, which can lead to problems such as heart disease. The findings could change heart disease detection and treatment for millions.

Cancer researchers named to federal Moonshot committee

Two researchers at Siteman Cancer Center — Graham Colditz, MD, PhD, and Robert Schreiber — have been named as advisers to the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative. The effort aims to maximize investments in cancer research and to advance cancer care.

WashU Expert: SCOTUS should not have punted on Zubik v. Burwell

The U.S. Supreme Court has returned to the lower courts a case challenging the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive requirement for employers. That leaves women employees around the country in limbo, said the School of Law’s Elizabeth Sepper.

Yewande Apatira stands  with her adviser and instructor, Tracy SpitznagleYewande Apatira grew up in Nigeria and knew from a young age she wanted to work in health care. Apatira is to receive her doctorate in physical therapy this week. She ultimately plans to return home and work to advance women’s health in Africa.
