Mary McKernan McKay named Brown School dean

Mary McKernan McKay has been appointed dean of the Brown School, effective July 1, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. She is director of the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at New York University’s Silver School of Social Work.

Rise in marijuana use not as high as previously reported

An estimated 12.5 percent of U.S. adults reportedly used pot at least once in 2013, according to a new study. But that research, from the School of Medicine, also shows the rate of marijuana use did not double from 2002 to 2013, as another study reported.

2-1-1 Counts provides snapshot of vulnerable families’ needs

Each year, more than 16 million people in the U.S. dial 2-1-1 for help with both emergency services requests and basic needs. The Brown’s School’s 2-1-1 Counts is the first tool to provide real-time searchable data from call centers nationwide.

University students support next generation of brain scientists

Members of Synapse, the university’s neuroscience club, are helping local high school students prepare for the annual St. Louis Area Brain Bee. The event is Saturday, Feb. 13, in McDonnell Hall.

Celebration set for Edwards-Fahey court dedication

Edwards-Fahey Court will be dedicated Friday, Feb. 12, celebrating the remarkable tenures of women’s basketball coach Nancy Fahey and men’s basketball coach Mark Edwards. The dedication will occur between the women’s and men’s games.
