Two-for-one bacterial virulence factor revealed

Chemist Timothy Wencewicz, of Arts & Sciences, suggests we try a new approach with antibiotics. Drugs that hobble production of virulence factors, which help bacteria establish an infection in a host, would put less selective pressure on bacteria and delay the evolution of resistance. In the journal Infectious Diseases, he describes recent work on a target virulence factor.

Poverty linked to childhood depression, changes in brain connectivity

Analyzing brain scans of children, university researchers found that key structures in the brain are connected differently in poor children than in kids raised in more affluent settings. The brain’s hippocampus, a structure key to learning, memory and regulation of stress, and the amygdala, which is linked to stress and emotion, connect differently in poor children.

Kemper exhibit on art and drones opens Friday

We are living at the dawn of the drone age. The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum presents “To See Without Being Seen: Contemporary Art and Drone Warfare,” opening Friday, Jan. 29. The exhibition investigates ramifications of drone warfare and raises questions about power, technology, surveillance and fear.

Brown School to launch Envolve Center

Washington University is launching a partnership with Duke University and Centene Corp. aimed at translating research into more effective health-related behaviors. Michal Grinstein-Weiss, of the Brown School, will lead the Envolve Center for Health Behavior Change. A launch event will be held from 2-5 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 28, in Hillman Hall.
